Visual Spatial Homeschool Curriculum

Visual Spatial Homeschool Curriculum

Visual Spatial Learners learn best through pictures and information presented visually.

Choose Visual Spatial homeschool curriculum that is brimming with pictures, can be read aloud, or uses manipulatives. Look for resources that include visual spatial learning activities such as drawing, building models and graphic organizers. Avoid workbooks and textbooks (in most cases).

Lets Memorize States and Capitals Let's Memorize States & Capitals Using Pictures & Stories
I'm amazed at how quickly (and painlessly) my kids (13, 8, 5 years old) learned the states and capitals. The pictures and word associations made it so easy for them. Each state has an outline of the state, a picture associating the state with its capital, and a sentence about the picture. The author also gives tips on memorizing plus activities to add variety.

Language Arts for Visual Spatial Learners

Visual Spatial learners benefit from visual aids when learning new information and for getting their thoughts on paper. Look for resources that utilize flow charts, concept mapping, graphic organizers, and art.

Visual Spatial learners are brilliant with content yet struggle with the mechanics of writing. Remember, best-selling authors have editors! Avoid curriculum that emphasizes spelling, grammar, and capitalization.

Teaching Writing To Auditory, Visual, and Kinesthetic Learners Write On!
I am using this curriculum with my 10 year old reluctant writer. She thanked me for getting it and now requests that we do writing first each day! It is artistic in nature by encouraging the student to draw pictures to go with the writing. The assignments also draw upon the student's imagination which is a strength for Visual Spatial Learners. Each lesson is very visual, using graphic organizers and illustrations.

Life of Fred
Life of Fred is a very non-traditional curriculum that works well with many Visual-Spatial learners (including mine). Each book reads like a story and the math concepts are taught by applying them to real life situations within the story. Here is another mom's experience:

"One programme I would like to tell you about that is excellent for Visual Spatial kids, and can be used with Kinaesthetic learners as well, is Life of Fred. It is math in story form - a lesson is a day out of the life of Fred. There are lots of drawings in the books and my kinaesthetic boys love to "enact" what we read. I know of older kids who learned fractions by dividing a pizza, and not just math, there are so many other topics that are touched on while reading! It is also a great hit under special needs kids, as they just "get" the math and life concepts that are talked about in the books. It covers from gr.1 to College level math. Its just an all round awesome series of books." E. from South Africa

Phonics for Visual Spatial Learners

Visual Spatial learners often struggle with learning to read. Use a phonics and whole word approach to reading. Since they think in pictures, connect letter sounds with pictures. Give them plenty of time with this.

Itchy's Alphabet Itchy's Alphabet learners need to visualize information. For the 'm' sound this program uses the key-word 'mountains'. When you think of 'mountains', it immediately reminds you of the formation of the letter 'm' as well as the 'm' sound. I wish I had this program to teach my oldest to read!
