"Oh, she's such a drama queen!"
"His head is always in the clouds!"
These statements describe different learning style dispositions. Working with your child's personality lays the foundation for cooperation and improved learning.
For example…
- Paula the Performer gives an Oscar winning "performance" (i.e. tantrum) when asked to finish her multiplication drill sheet.
- Paula the Performer dances around the living room while repeating multiplication facts. (This was her idea of course.)
Working With Your Child's Disposition Accomplishes More With Less Effort
Say you are using a textbook, workbook and testing to teach biology this year. Read through the following dispositions and think about how each child would respond.
Inventing - Enjoys experimental subjects and activities where they can provide solutions, ask lots of questions, create designs, and discover on their own time.
Performing - Loves to entertain, considered the family clown, often labeled hyperactive or ADHD. Enjoys challenging authority, rules, and traditions. Thrives in an environment where they can move freely and be spontaneous.
Producing - Prefers structured, sequential subjects and activities. Enjoys routine, organization and drill work.
Relating/Inspiring - Needs plenty of time to talk, discuss and interact with others. Enjoys human interest subjects and cooperative activities.
Thinking/Creating - Enjoys time alone for thinking, wondering and dreaming. Prefer creative activities and subjects that provide artistic expression. Often labeled ADD.
What did you come up with?
The Producing children would get the most success and enjoyment from the Biology textbook approach.
But how would you teach Biology to the others? Find a curriculum that works with their learning style.
