Dry Erase Board for Kinesthetic Writing & Sensory Integration Issues

by Shari

My 9 yr. old kinesthetic learner also battles sensory integration issues and writing for him is a struggle. He has the ideas and can articulate well, but to him, the sound and sensation of the pencil "scraping" against the paper is like fingernails on a chalk board. The dry erase board has been a lifesaver. I have a smaller board I can fit into our copier and copy his assignments as well for record keeping.

Typing/Stylus/Transparencies
by: Anonymous

My 9 year old aspie is the same way when it comes to using pencil/pen and paper. He hates it and also says it makes his wrist hurt. He doesn't mind typing though and will also write with a stylus on the tablet Pc. Dry erase boards and sheet protectors are great ideas. I imagine a transparency would work as well either clipped over worksheet or printed out with a notebook paper template/ruled to keep writing neat.

Dry Erase / Plastic Sleeves
by: Shari

Laurke,
That is a fantastic idea! Slipping the worksheet inside the plastic sleeve will help him to get use to writing in the right scale and answering the questions in proper form. Love it! I will give that a try. Thank you so much! Shari
PS: You're not alone. :-)

Sensory Integration and Copywork
by: Laurke

I've just recently learned about sensory issues. My 7 year old son struggled this year with copywork. Here's a twist on the dry erase idea for copywork...

Slide the copywork into a sheet protector and write on that. This would be easy to make a copy of.

My son balks at copywork and we have tears almost daily - and I'm only asking him to copy 10-12 words (2 lines) each day. He always claims his hand/wrist hurts, but the doctor said nothing is wrong. It doesn't hurt any other time of day!

Easy tip for record keeping
by: Jena

I've always taken digital photos of my children's work on their dry-erase boards. Using a copier is a great idea!
