I've always been a book-worm so when I began homeschooling in 2003 I just knew I would be able to teach my daughter successfully.

I was wrong.

My daughter was struggling, and it was only Kindergarten! Reading and math were a challenge. Her confidence waned and my frustration and insecurity soared. Homeschooling shouldn't be this hard.

I was introduced to the book Discover Your Child's Learning Style. I gave my daughter a learning styles test. What an eye opener - she learns through pictures and discovery. My structured, sequential curriculum was actually keeping her from learning!

I changed my teaching methods and created a custom homeschool curriculum to fit the way she learns and guess what...

It worked!

She began reading easily and enjoyed it! Math made sense to her. I've learned a very important and life changing lesson...

It's not enough to have good intentions. You need the right tool for the job. Otherwise, you're pounding a nail with a noodle!

A Needle In The Haystack.

Now that I understood the importance of learning styles, I was eager to incorporate it into our homeschool. I began learning everything I could about learning style theories and practice. To my dismay, I found lots of definitions but not much practical advice.

Finding homeschool curriculum geared toward my daughter's learning style was pure trial and error. Curriculum websites and catalogs do not list their products by learning style so I would research each one to see if it would work. I feel your frustration (and your pocketbook's pain) when a $100 math program fails miserably. With a limited budget I needed to get it right the first time.
